Mahtay Meets…

This week team Mahtay enjoyed catching up with inspiring yoga teacher Melissa Coton!

 

What inspired you to become a yoga teacher?

Yoga and meditation have changed my life so it seemed like a natural next step to find a way to share this practice with others.

 

Why would you recommend starting yoga?

Yoga can help with improving general physical health, easing stress, regulating sleep, aiding digestion, improving relationships with others and with oneself as well as living in the present and finding inner peace. Ultimately, I always recommend to people that they try different styles themselves so they can experience the benefits and decide which one suits them best as we are all different and have different needs.

What do you do to relax?

If I have a little time, I like walking in nature without my phone or any music.

If I don’t have much time, meditating always relaxes me. I tend to find most things can be relaxing when done mindfully, like cooking and even cleaning haha! Hope I won’t get floods of requests from people to clean their house haha!

 

What is your daily/weekly fitness routine? 

I have a lot of energy so I am very active.

I tend to practice yoga 4 times a week minimum, I love 6.30 am classes, they set me up for the day. I box in an awesome women’s boot camp once a week, 7am, gloves, punching bags and gansta rap, not quite the same vibe as in my yoga studio! And I hit the gym once or twice a week during  my lunch time. I also like doing dance workshops at Pineapple studio when I have a chance, I’m majorly crushing on Dancehall at the moment.

Do you have certain health rules that you swear by?

I don’t like the world ‘rules’ as I tend to think they are made to be broken, sorry not sorry.

However I would say my main ‘thang’ is having a good breakfast. I am currently obsessed with porridge, I add nuts, coconut, goji berries, chia seeds and an apple or whichever fruit I can get my hands on.

 

What is your guilty pleasure? is there a food or drink that you always allow yourself?

90% Dark chocolate with Medjool dates. I stick to 2 squares /day.

I love Matcha lattes.

Do you have favourite health food shops, markets or restaurants in London?

I could spend hours in Wholefoods but I try to avoid it as I end up spending too much haha!

I like going to local markets (the one in Putney) and independent healthy food shops best.

Neal’s Yard Remedies is great for natural skin products.

Are there any wellness or yoga retreats that you want to visit or recommend?

I will be teaching on 2 retreats with Will Wheeler this year, one in Somerset: the last week end in March and one in Puglia (Italy) in July. I would naturally recommend both 🙂 but I have not had a chance to think about which ones I would like to go on myself.
